The 33 Chilean miners who had been trapped by a cave-in for 17 days were reached by rescuers with a tiny drilled hole. The miners had only 2 days of food in their shelter-in-place special shelter. As in the article I read today they were so disciplined that they had not only stretched the food supply 15 additional days but they still had some left.
It is so difficult to imagine that they are more than a half-mile below ground and the plan is to bore a hole big enough to lift them out. That is a long way to be hoisted out especially since it will take a few months to bore out a hole that big for them so they will have to stay put for now.
The story about how they have survived and how they will have to continue to survive until they can be retrieved is such a great story about human determination and survival, I hope this doesn't fall off of the grid of news in the time between now and their return to the surface.
